JoAnn, you're wonderfully sick. Seriously sick.

Of course, either the whole masquerade would be taken up by the whole
periodic table, or it would be a several-year presentation project. I
could just see a website to maintain who had done what element when. Of
course, it would have links to the different costumes. :-)

An insane project, no doubt.

Good question. Some elements only last for fractions of a second, so
you really don't get to see them. They're known by the impact that they
have on other stuff.

I guess for the stuff that you don't get to see, microphotographs might
come into play.

And we could play the Tom Leher song "The elements" as the background music, and choreograph the whole thing so that the spotlight hits each element coming forward as its name is called.....

We would have to do it as a half time show rather than a competition though, otherwise there wouldn't be anyone left to be in the Masquerade!

You still might not have a masquerade if you did that because most of

Interesting. I had the opposite experience. I didn't spend as much at

Sadly, I just think of the MagicCon WorldCon periodic table... and I
think of red.

Not sure what the main costumes were (costumer's name deleted on
purpose). However, there were a lot of extras drafted in blacks given
period cards. There were far too many folks on the stage, rehearsed or
unrehearsed (these unrehearsed), their choreography to get "excited" and
bop around as the presentation happened. Back of the stage turned out
to not be rectangular but had large cut out corners. The "red" was not
sequins or fabric... it was the block that have to be cleaned up after
the EMTs.... after one of the elements went off the stage into that
pit.

Sorry.... that's just the image that flashes with that costume...

Moral, Costumes with really big groups make great spectacle... but the
more folks on stage, the more rehearsal and care. It can get very
crowded... and unsafe fast... even on a world con stage.

Just scary images of stuff that goes with costume planning... eak.

HOW DO YOU VOTE FOR SITE SELECTION?

1) I vote for the site I've never visited and would like to.

2) I vote for the site I have visited and would like to do so again.

3) I vote for the site with the best tourist stuff to see/do.

4) I vote for the site I'll be able to afford.

5) I vote for the site I can drive to.

6) I vote for the site I think will put on the best convention.

7) I vote for the site I think will put on the best masquerade.

8) I vote for the site that's never had a World Con (new blood).

9) I vote for the site with the committee that's done several World Cons.

I realize your answer is probably a combination of these statements, so list
the numbers in the order of importance.

I'll go first: 4, 8, and 6.

Subject: Re: R.I.P. Spyder and WorldCon
Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Ricky and I will not be able to
attend WorldCon this year. (No, we don't have memberships to re-sell.)

On August 12, Spyder (my hearse) was involved in two separate car
accidents, 15 minutes and 300 feet apart, on the Pittsburgh exit of the PA
Turnpike. The first was with a Lincoln Navigator, who clipped her in the
left rear. The second was with an 18-wheeler, who pretty much crushed her
right side with the left rear tires of his trailer. Both times, I was
sitting at a full stop in rush-hour traffic, and they hit me. Totally not
my fault, but definitely very scary (especially the encounter with the
18-wheeler).

I am OK (both were glancing impacts at low speed). But due to her age and
the amount of damage, poor Spyder is totalled. Both insurance companies are
giving us very fair settlements for her, but we've had to take on

Well, to start with we bankrolled the Costumers Suite in a real 3-room

But boy was it fun!

(We also invested extra money to make sure our visitors from out of town

I'm sorry to read about Spyder, but I'm really happy to read that
you're okay. I was driving my then sweetheart's car back from
ConFrancisco when a double-sectioned bus sideswiped the car and didn't
stop. Yeah, I can understand your scare with the 18-wheeler.

Again, I'm glad you're okay.

That's one reason I try to switch genres every so often.
There was a period where I got into a serious rut (pun intended)

Even if people haven't heard the song, if they know that it was written
in the 1950's, they know that lots of new stuff has been added to the
periodic table since then. ;-)

JoAnn: That brings up an interesting question. Which version of the

in-between?

I didn't think gaseous mustard gas had a color.
Just looked it up on Google--yes, colorless &c liquid & colorless gas.
Also a compound.

Chlorine is a yucky green that I don't like.
Cl(sub)2 is the elemental form, but ick.

Cartoon characters show a finely divied solid dispersed insufficiently.

And my dratted designs all want colorless & the same shape, too, though they

Well, if they want to be invisible, why not make a ballon based outfit for them to sit inside of? I would say a hot air balloon even, although that isn't one single gas. Make a helium balloon dress! Teach those noble gasses who'e boss!

You could limit the costumes to the elements known by the alchemists. You'd
get to play with all those alchemical symbols as design motifs.

Any gas can be liquified with low enough temperature and high enough
pressure. Liquid oxygen is pale blue.

I expect we're going for an allegorical figure representing the element's
properties. Lots of bright lights for neon? maybe a spacesuit for oxygen?
Something light and blimpy for helium?
