Remember everyone the magic numbers - 6 - 2 - 1. The minimum number of
hours of sleep, meals, and baths/showers. Your body will thank you on
Monday Morning!

I was an SCA medic. You break the rules and I would usually be seeing
you <g>.

Mythically yours,
Lisa

PS OK, the Bath/shower part is hard at tourneys, we reommended soap and
water and a washcloth. Those new "bathing cloths" that you can throw out
look promising for travel/camping when you can't get to plumbing.

We've dropped a number of hotels from consideration for CC26 because
they're, well, not sufficiently enclosed. A ballroom that you have to
walk a hundred meters or so outside to get to just isn't an option when
you're planning for the tail-end of the rainy season. Function space
that opens directly to the outside (and not to the inside) is also a
problem.

Subject: Re: Closer than you think
Technically, Philadelphia is south of the Mason-Dixon Line! (Mason and
Dixon surveyed the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland to the west of
Philadelphia, where Pennsylvania dips noticeably south.) So, since scrapple
is native to Philadelphia and vicinity, I guess it qualifies as Southern,
but don't try to tell that to someone from Philly!

I developed a great fondness for scrapple when I was a student at the
University of Pennsylvania; Tina grew up with it in Trenton, New Jersey.
Properly fried, the surface is golden brown and firm; the interior well
cooked but soft. It isn't easy to find scrapple cooked properly,
unfortunately. On the other hand, I never had the opportunity to develop a
taste for grits (or for breakfast potatoes, for that matter -- they were not
a breakfast staple in New York City when I grew up, although they are, now).

ST. Teresa's, my church, still has a crying room. Indeed, I think most
Catholic churches in Lincoln still have them. I can't speak for the
Protestant churches, but I wouldn't be surprised if the larger ones at
least have them.

The Lied Performing Arts Theater has a room for people who are late, so I
wouldn't be surprised if they let fussy kids with parents use it as
well.

I'm making *fresh* matzoh ball soup. The chicken soup made from scratch is
cooking right now. The matzoh balls get made tomorrow.

Anyone local who's still in the area tomorrow (Wednesday) night is welcome to
come over for some fresh soup and Indian chaat dinner at 8:00 p.m. Indian
Chaat is like Chinese dim sum or Spanish tapas (small portions/snacky kind
of meal).

If you are coming, please call and let me know.

Sounds like my pixies. Among other things, they hide my patterns
so that we can't work on anything; my scissors disappear at the wrong time;
thread won't go through the needle, although the same thread went through
the same needle the last time. My needle graber moves from one side of the
table to the other; or keeps ending up stuffed in the junk box that I just
took it out of five minutes ago. Thread colours disappear. Bags of sequin
burst in the sewing box; tops of bead bottles come loose and spill the
contents around the carpet. They like to steal my beading needles. I also
think that they're the ones actually responsible for my difficulties in
doing costume and needlework related math.
Oh, and Gremlins and pixies never ask to come; they simply come.
Too bad about the fancy fabric not being there; they wanted to see how many
ways they could screw up the connections and the fibre optics. After all,
the more expensive the fabrics that they can ruin; the closer to the due
date they can make things go wrong; the more embarressing the results; the
more fun they have.

That would have been nice. I remember that it took me 3 tries to see all of
"2001" because I had to take Fiona out when she got a little noisy. There
were several other movies that I think I still haven't seen the complete
thing. Of course, when she started teething, we discoverd paragoric and
that made a worl of difference. (Explains a lot about my kid, too)

Yes, and in just three days, you'll be getting a lift from Henry
or Enrique from the train station to the hotel via much of three states; or
what you'll be able to see of them in the 45 minutes that it will take the
two of you to cover the distance. I'm soooooooooo glad that you are calm

Field trips. Getting from the car to the hotel how ever many times
it takes to get everything out of the car and into the hotel. Driving
conditions. What to wear in the car. Out of hotel restaurants. Getting
everything back to the car in order to come home. Getting everything into
cabs, shuttles, or public transist to get from the train, bus, or airport to
the hotel. Proper attire for when you make the front pages after your
driver gets hauled over by some bomber squadron for flying this truck
without a permit. Getting from the car to the various pit stops between
home and the confention. Do the boxes of stuff need to be water proof or
will cardboard do?

Subject: getting to cons
Dear Carl:

>nope by the numbers

Okay. Using last year's Toronto Trek as an example.
Day before con, get luggage packed; make certain that Don has his
luggage packed as promised. Find out that he's going to do it after work.
After work, find out that he is going to pack in morning. Pack most of his
stuff for him.
Tell Allen to pack. He is going to pack in morning. Bang head against
wall.
Morning. Allen packs. Linda packs food. Don packs all the stuff that
we didn't pack; that he just has to have; can't go to a con without an
attache case. Allen spends five minutes packing and is ready to go. Don in
shower, where he's most useful. Linda and Allen packing cart with luggage.
Alix ordered to stay out of the way, while they take luggage downstairs.
Car is in the parking lot of the apartment building; no cover on parking
lot. Alix packing stuff that will sit on her lap; headdresses, dolls, root
witch, basket to hold them; purse. camera bag. sun hat.
Linda and Allen with second load. Don dressed. Car mostly loaded. Last
bathroom call. Alix and Allen head down. Alix tries to load self into car
while carrying all the stuff that will sit on her lap; under her legs; on
top of feet. Linda and Don come down. Linda goes back upstairs for what
was forgotten because she's faster than Don.
Leave parking lot. Drive to Tim Horton's. Get coffee, iced
cappacinos, and muffins for Don, Linda, and Allen. Alix tried to find way
to move foot that is already getting cramped. Allen plugs in portable CD
player and attaches headphones. He's in the back behind Don; I'm in the
front beside Don. Alix can sing along with Allen's music. Don puts in BTO
tape. Alix sighs; looks out windows; occassioally tries to make
conversation over BTO.
Stop in Ingersol for pit stop. Alix unburies self; others actually
have to wait for her because the car alarm can't be set until she's out of
the car. Alix and Linda ready to leave. have to find guys. They are
either in line for the next caffine fix, or not to be seen. Linda and Alix
wait; wait some more. Finally check parking lot. Guys are already in car.
Alix re-entombs self.
Detour to Kitchener so that Don can check things out at Franklin
Covey. Wait in parking lot for store to open. Wait in parking lot for Don
to come out of store.
Pit stop this side of Guelph. Repeat of previous pit stop.
Last pit stop in Mississauga optional.
Continue on 401 to hotel. Miss the turn off because of construction;
sign has been taken down and not replaced. Check for map. Toronto area map
at home. Don remembers way from having worked in area...fifteen years ago.
Hour and a half later find hotel. Park car in parking lot. Sit in lobby
while Linda and Don registar. Snag Allen for helping with unloading before
he heads for pool. Find out that car has to be brought to front of hotel
for unloading; can no longer unload from side parking lot. Unload car onto
sidewalk. Don swearing because he knows how to do it, but we're getting in
the way. Don parks car. Wait around for luggage cart from hotel; all
luggage carts being used by dealers getting their stuff unloaded. Give up
and organize things. Linda, Don, and Allen taking stuff up. Alix minding
stuff. Alix finally gets to room. Don in funk from driving. Allen
disappeared. Linda stocking cooler with ice. Linda and Alix in bathing
suits heading for pool.
Alix and Co. heading for registration. Alix straps on roller blades
and gets nine panels, the art show, dealer's room, writer's workshop, and
masquerade done in two days. Spend in between time running between one end
of the hotel and the other end of the hotel, and up to higher levels for
every other panel. Does panel on curses while dressed as faerie godmother.
Sunday morning packing car. Finish panels, get photographs, get to
attend the Amber Benson question and Answer period. Linda and Alix hit
bathroom. Guys are meeting them at the car. Alix still wearing tudor coat
that is supposed to be put in trunk. Get to parking lot. Don and Allen
already in car with motor running. Alix trying to pack self in car with
extra long coat; wrong hat; armfull of dolls, etc. Car pulling out of
parking lot while dolls still on dash board; stuff falling. Ready to
scream. Foot jammed at wrong angle. Remain in the position until pit stop
other side of Guelph. manage to arrange things while guys inside. Curse
loadly and long.
Pit stop at Ingersol. Home. Park car. Don wants everything left in
car until "later". Alix rounding up dolls and other things that are not
staying in car. Don stomps upstairs. Allen has disappeared. Alix and
Linda truge upstairs. Don in bed. Linda with cart to unload car; doens't
need any help.
And last year, we had a station wagon. This year we have a
cavilier. Packing for this one is going to be fun!

Peace

Dear Elaine--

Let's get together and talk about Outreach for costumers. Unfortunately
I won't be at CC, and I just sold my memberships to Torcon 3, unable to
attend because of kid issues (Tommy's starting his SENIOR year). Wasn't
able to make Lunacon because of getting ready to go to the Czech
Repbublic (which was cool and had lots of beads). We WILL be at
Balticon, and at this point, I have no obligations and no costume to
compete. So let's talk! Maybe others are interested.

PS, can Carl bring my photo albums down with him, if he has room?

The fact is, that Robert and I tailored our con attendance, in part, as
to whether particular cons were family-friendly, once we started going to
a certain number of "regional" ones, back when our kids were younger
(from birth, up to about 14). I agree, my children were my
responsilbity, and it made Worldcons interesting, carrying two
dead-weight kids back to the room at 11 pm, wearing a gown and high heels
and carrying a baby bag. But at least we got to go to cons! And our
kids got to see Boston and Chicago and Orlando, and then got to spend a
long weekend withGrandma, when we went to Con Francisco, etc. And every
year I went to Costume Con by myself.

We included them in our family events and trips. And when they got
older, we got to see a side of cons we would never have investigated if
left to our own devices. My son Tommy is now the Maryland state champion
for Magic the Gathering, has won scholarships playing in tournaments, and
last year, got to go on his very first away-from-home-without-the-parents
trip, when we allowed him to fly to Orlando for an international
tournament with an older friend for 4 days. Both my kids have grown from
their con experiences, and made good friends.

Both my kids were amazed to watch their parents sing along with Weird Al
at a midnight singalong a few Worldcons ago, but I think it made them
understand that we like to have fun too.

The fan world isn't a bad place to grow up. I always felt that my kids
were a bit more protected there.

I just arrived straight from airport and have to put in full day at
work. If I don't fall asleep the minute I get home, I will post my
photos.

CC21 was incredible !!! Great job Henry, Andy, Kevin, Nancy, Jennifer
and a cast of thousands.

The SF-F Masquerade had a ton of Master class entries, all of them
great.

Iron Costumer was a hoot.

Historical Masquerade had so many "to die for" costumes.

I don't want to list winner in case my sleep deprived brain gets it
wrong. Anyone have the list?

Wait a bit until Betsy and others get home to post the winners. I also had
a blast. You, my friend, have a very twisted mind <G> Can't wait to see
your photos.

Elaine

Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we shall always be amused!

OK, I remembered and it worked.

H**sl*t22

However, as you say I need to change it to a kinder gentler password.

How do I do that.

My current Email is Brucethelesser@aol.com

How do I change that, from wyldaires@aol.com?

Stupid, Stupid Dobey.

I attached a reply to the wrong e-mail.

Please disregard all.

Chalk it up to my depression of not making the Con.

If you want to watch my uploads in progress to SiWebsite and can
excuse my lack of not having correct spellings and credits till I can
update from Costume Connections (correct names added to our pictures
from the con only, not swiping Betsy's pictures) then you are welcome
to look at the link through the calendar section:

http://www.geocities.com/siwcostumers/calendar.htm

Note: many of the things currently there were uploaded from the con
so I need to clean it up and just keep adding pages since I have a
lot of photos downloaded to my laptop that I haven't even viewed yet,
much less formatted into web pages. So even everything there now may
look different within a couple of days since it's a work in progress
by chapter members present to show what happened at the con to SiW
members who were unfortunately unable to attend.

The purpose is for viewers of the page see something, rather than
being told 'it was great, you should have been there.' So we had two
digital cameras working overtime to capture as much as possible, when
the photographers were not participating in the CC events themselves
with the added thought that Costume Connections would have the
definitive photos of the program participants.
