We no longer have King rooms available at the $129 rate, but we have been able to obtain some King rooms at the higher rate of $159. Double double rooms are still available at the $129 rate (with some also available at a higher rate).  Please make your room reservations now.

Also, if you have a room reservation and aren’t planning on using it, please cancel by Friday 2/15 so that some other person may pick up the room you have canceled.  Our room block will close shortly after that and we will no longer be able to get rooms at our negotiated rates. The actual final cancellation deadline is 48 hours before you were scheduled to arrive. But, if you wait until then to cancel your room, no one else will be able to get the room you have freed up at our negotiated rates.

Please email hotel@costumecon37.org if you have specific questions.

Subject: Costume Con 37 - Panelist Information
Hello!

I'm Jamila, and I'm the workshop and panels coordinator for CC37 in Danvers this year. For those who had signed up and declared their interest in panels, I have sent out login information and details to get into our Zambia system, where you can declare what you would like to run. There will be 5 panel rooms and 2 workshop rooms at the convention this year. If you didn't get this email from me, check your spam filters. There were a few emails that bounced, and some people didn't leave emails on the form when signing up. If you think this happened, let us know. If you didn't request to be considered a panelist, and now would like to join, let me know that as well. This way I can get you into the system.

Please make sure you fill our preferences by Feb 17th. I would like to have a general schedule set by the beginning of March. I am also still taking panel ideas for those who think of anything that they would like to see. Any other questions, you can email me at krazyflower@gmail.com

Subject: JMM Insights: More than a Run of the "Mill"

Deputy Director Tracie Guy-Decker and Director of Collections and Exhibits Joanna Church collaborated on this month's edition of JMM Insights which, somewhat coincidentally, is all about collaboration!

Have you ever heard of "The Mill" at Stevenson University? Well until last year we hadn't either. That's when we held a new projects briefing for Will Backstrom, Senior Vice President for Client and Community Relations at PNC Bank. Will, who has been a great friend and supporter of JMM, stopped the conversation when we brought up the topic of Fashion Statement (the exhibit about the way in which clothing expresses personal and social identity) and Stitching History from the Holocaust (a traveling exhibit from Milwaukee. that celebrates the creative talents of a designer who perished in the Shoah).

Will, who keeps tabs on Baltimore's cultural scene, pointed out that just as our exhibit was closing next summer the Maryland Historical Society would be putting on a major exhibit of their extraordinary collection of clothing. He thought we might cross-market our projects. And then he had one other thought, "what about the Mill?"

The "Mill" it turns out, is a capstone course for students at Stevenson University with an interest in design. It brings together students from departments like Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Film & Moving Image, and Business Communications work together, almost as if they were a design and marketing agency, to work on solving a specific, real-world problem. With Will's help, JMM, the Maryland Historical Society, and Stevenson U faculty and students came together and we became “clients” of the Mill.

Stevenson students in the Mill are incorporating our project into a much larger endeavor: a public affairs campaign   to reinvigorate the fashion industry in the city of Baltimore. They developed a name for the effort (Stitching MD Together), a brand (stitchingmdtogether.org), and a full plan to research, educate, engage, and, they hope, encourage a growth in the fashion industry in the state. They are even hoping that, when the Maryland campaign is successful, other states can use the same template.

As part of this collaboration, JMM staff have visited the Mill classroom a number of times, listening to student presentations, discussing the upcoming projects, and even presenting a unit on social media marketing. Students have also used JMM and MdHS for their research into the history of the fashion industry in Baltimore and in Maryland and are creating a documentary film. Their research proved interesting and productive in more ways than we initially anticipated!

Stevenson University students setting up for documentary filming in the JMM Library, October 26, 2018.

As part of the students’ documentary project, they came to the JMM to interview Joanna, and film some of our textile collections. To make sure those pieces got a good showing, Trillion and Joanna turned the library into a miniature photo studio and prepped a variety of outfits to a presentable display standard, ready for their respective close-ups. A handy side benefit of this process was that we were able to take some good photographs for our own purposes, in advance of the upcoming Fashion Statement exhibit.

This ermine coat (complete with tails sewn into the interior seams), made by Havelock and Selenkow, Baltimore, was a 35th birthday present to Alene Steiger Adler from her husband Charles Adler, Jr., in 1941. It will be featured in “Fashion Statement,” opening April 7, 2019. Gift of Amalie Adler Ascher, JMM 1989.167.30a.

The student film crew got some on-the-ground experience (not that they weren’t already quite skilled) along with the footage they needed for their documentary. In addition, they got the chance to take a close look at museum artifacts, and at techniques for interpretation and display. An article of clothing can tell you so much about the person who wore it and the times and culture in which it was worn, but people haven’t always given that idea much thought; sharing that insight, and seeing students’ respond to it, is a delight. We think this deeper understanding of the roles of clothing and fashion will help them strengthen their campaign.

Joanna talking with Grace Clark, part of the Stitching Maryland Together Communications team, prior to the interview.

In addition to the deliverables of the research and the documentary, we’ve also been partnering with Stevenson students for some of the details of the visitor experience in Fashion Statement, the JMM-curated portion of the double-bill opening April 7th. The interactive experiences in our exhibits are often among the most memorable to our visitors, and among the most complicated for museum staff to create. For Fashion Statement, Stevenson professors have helped us brainstorm interesting mechanisms for engaging visitors even as their students are helping us make those ideas a reality. We are working with several different Stevenson classes and individual students to achieve the interactive visitor experience. From graphic artists to aspiring fashion designers, the collaboration with the University is providing JMM with fresh ideas and talent as well as providing students with real-world, client-driven experiences.

All of these many positive outcomes have much to remind us about the power of partnership and collaboration. And with deep gratitude to Mr. Backstrom, whose eyes lit up when we told him about Fashion Statement, we reiterate the truth of the fact that one person has enormous power to make a difference: all of these synergies and win-win moments were made possible by a single conversation many, many months ago.

Curated by the Jewish Museum of Milwaukee

On view at the Jewish Museum of Maryland

April 7, 2019 – August 4, 2019

Paul and Hedy Strnad were trapped. The Nazis were closing in. In an attempt to escape, they sent Hedy’s dress designs to their cousin in Milwaukee to help them get to the United States. All efforts failed. Hedy and Paul perished in the Holocaust, but their memory lives on in a letter and sketches, which form the core of this haunting exhibit.

Stitching History from the Holocaust brings to life the innovative dress designs of Hedy Strnad. Hedy and her husband Paul originally sent these designs to Paul’s cousins in America as part of their effort to escape Prague in 1939. That effort ultimately failed, and these beautiful dresses serve not only as a unique memorial for a lost talent, but also as a touchstone for discussion of the human cost of the Holocaust and the plight of refugee populations.

The Jewish Museum of Maryland’s commitment to Holocaust education makes this exhibit an important one. Stitching History aims for visitors to see that each victim of the Holocaust has their own story that deserves to be remembered and that the Holocaust took not just lives, but also the potential those lives had and their future contributions to our world. At the same time our goal is to help visitors make connections between their own lives and histories and the stories of others.

The Baltimore presentation of this exhibit is made possible, in part, by our lead sponsor, The Herbert Bearman Foundation.

Hello, as some of you know, I produced a catalog of my Cosplay Transformation project and had them available for sale at CC36. It is done as a fundraiser for the eventual production of the proper book, which I have started to work on.

Unfortunately, as much as I love to, I will not be able to attend CC37 due to budgetary constraints. However, I still have a number of copies of the catalog for sale. PLEASE BUY THEM, as I have already paid for their printing.

You can buy it here:  https://richardman.photo/photobooks/

If you just want to make a donation etc., here's the link: https://richardman.photo/patreon-and-gofundme/

Thank you for your support.

Hey folks:

I'm making this announcement now, so that you can update your pack list for CC37.  I'm planning on shooting another costume music video like I did back at CC32.  If you haven't seen it,  it's here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zxLOn_GFac.  With all the cosplay music videos out there, I'm trying to raise Costume-Con's visibility.   I'm going to be mainly shooting Saturday and Sunday, but also plan on getting footage from most of the actual events.   I'm really wanting to emphasize craftsmanship and detail of our art form, so I plan to take a lot of detail close ups.  I'm especially interested in any original designs, but I want cosplay, too.  I'll be looking for individuals and groups with a theme.  If the weather is decent, I'd like to do some shooting outside the hotel, not just indoors.   So if you'd like to participate, I'll be around through Monday (although I'll probably be out doing touristy stuff most of Monday).   To give the mood of what the finished product will sound like, here is the music I'll be using:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRwmxS1AL6E

Hello All:

I arrive in Boston on Wednesday at 20:55 if all goes according to plan on Delta 2596.

I have a spare hotel bed since hubby is not coming to Costume-Con as anticipated because a local filk convention is conflicting. His membership has already been donated to someone, but is anyone interested in sharing a room? I am smoke allergic, so a non-smoking female would be preferred.

Until later--

Subject: Re: [siliconweb] Costume-Con Boston Transportation and DoubleTree
Hello All:

I arrived at Logan Airport, and after direction from Information, found
the Logan Express stop. The Peabody (purple) bus was supposed to arrive
in four minutes. The sign indicating when the buses would arrive showed
four minutes. Then, it switched to fourteen minutes. So, it arrived
late.

I was told that the need for a taxi would be called in, and that a taxi
would be waiting for me at the other end. Not my experience.

I had to go inside at the end of the bus ride to pay the fare, and then
they called for a taxi. I had to wait 15-20 minutes for the taxi to
arrive. I was inside a building, so I did not get cold, but I still had
to wait.

The Logan Express was a comfortable bus, and I found the legroom
generous. Those with longer legs should be comfortable.

Taxi fare from Peabody to the DoublTee was $18 plus any tip. The
DoubleTree's shuttle stops at 21:00, so if you arrive later than that at
Peabody, be prepared to get a taxi.

The DoubleTree is pleasant, and the bed seems to be comfortable.

The closet has a safe in it that makes it difficult to hang anything
full length. If you have a rolling clothes rack, you should probably
bring it. The dresser, under the television, has four shallow drawers. A
thick sweater folded in half takes up the vertical space.

The one nightstand has a rwasonable drawer plus an open shelf underneath
that is a perfect size for a backpack.

The bathroom has reasonable counter space with a shower/tub combo. The
usual too small tub for most adults that you have to step over to take a
shower. It is really aimed at kids or smaller people.

The heater is rather noisy when running. If you are sound sensitive when
trying to sleep, be aware. Consider bringing ear plugs.

Until later--

Carole

We will be adding single pattern winners soon, and historical after this evening’s show.

We would like to congratulate Carol Salemi as the latest Lifetime Achievement Award winner. There was a photo op earlier today.

Ken Warren says: “Please let the Lifetime Achievement Award people know that I have complimentary copies of their group photo for them at my table in the Masquerade Registration table area.”

Fabric.com has offered us a 10% discount through their business members program. You can claim your discount with your proof of membership that's found with your copy of the ICG newsletter.

How to get and use your new Fabric.com Discount!

Go to the website http://www.fabric.com/

Click on the Business Program button at the top of the page

Input your information and then upload a PDF or JPG copy of your proof of membership. Elected and Chapter officers can use the link to the ICG webpage listing their position instead of uploading proof of membership.

An email will be sent to you within 3 business days with your special code. Your code works only with your account and cannot be used on another account.

Subject: Heads Up: Costume-Con Visual Archives
Hi, all!

It's sadly time. I can't put off upgrading PHP on the costume-con.org
site any longer.

I'm in the process of creating PDF contact sheets for ALL of the CCs in
our Gallery. I should be done today. When I finish, I'm going to upgrade
PHP, which I believe means the Gallery will no longer be accessible.

If you have experience with WordPress and you want to help with the
Archive conversion, now's the time to volunteer. I've got a complete
backup of the whole site, including all of the folders and albums of
photos, but restoring won't be a quick task because of the nature of the
changes that are coming. I could really use some WordPress-savvy assistance.

What this means: Photos of the most recent Costume-Con will be delayed
by as long as it takes to get the replacement space up and running.

If you're available and willing to help, please hit me up offlist and
I'll set up a communication space just for us, likely in Slack.

Thanks, all, for your support over the years! Hopefully we won't be down
for long.

Just in case you didn't see announcements from Dublin 2019: an Irish Worldcon, we've opened up registration for the masquerade.

Everyone (even on-site entries) will be filling out the same webform, so we'd really like to encourage folks to fill out as much as they can in advance. If you are thinking of entering, please fill out the form, accessible here:   https://forms.gle/dT8fSfQiTKtgnzw87

(Entries are not complete until you check in in person at the Masquerade Desk, but if you fill it out in advance you will save yourself and us buckets of time, and help me plan the flow of the show better, so it would be greatly appreciated.)

Also, a heads-up : Dublin will NOT be selling any memberships at the door (even one-days are advance sales), so if you are planning to attend Worldcon this year, buy your memberships before  2 August, 2019 at 00:01 Irish Time!

Subject: Costume-ConNections upgrade in progress!
Okay, you guys.

Some of you already know this, but I want to be sure everyone is aware of what's happening so I don't get a ton of messages reporting a problem.

The Costume-ConNections site (www.Costume-Con.org) is undergoing some growing pains, related to our ancient Gallery2 installation and a required upgrade to PHP, the engine that drove the system.

A few of you reported to me that there was a search problem in Google relating to the site. The name shows just fine, but when clicked, a redirect is in place that sends you to a bogus pharma site instead. This redirect was possible because of the version of PHP we left in place, so that people could still reach our Visual Archives.

You can still get to the site by providing the direct URL instead of searching for it on Google. That URL is:

http://www.Costume-Con.org/

As of 10 minutes ago:
1. Upgrade to PHP 7.3 is now complete!
2. As expected, the Gallery is now down. NONE of the content was lost in this process, but the content will no longer display. FOR NOW.
3. I've put in a trouble ticket for the pharma redirect connected to Google. The technician thinks the redirect issue will go away within the next 48 hours. I hope he's right, but we have the ability to track progress on the repair.

What this means:

Until we have a workaround, you won't have access to the images from within our website. I have NOT touched any of the folders containing the images, and I have a complete local backup (and a backup of the backup) so that we haven't lost any of the images, just access to them.

I have a complete contact sheet set for all of the competitions listed in the Visual Archives, together with the labels for as many of the items as were labeled. Obviously, the photos from this year's event will be delayed until we get the replacement for the Gallery up and running.

I depart for Ireland on August 10th, two weeks from today. I expect to have access to the internet, but I don't know what that will look like until I get there.

If you have any questions about any of this, please let me know!

I'm working on building the rest of the data pages for the Data archive, using the PDFs I generated from the site. That work should have been done a year ago, but I've been distracted. I want to finish it before I leave the continent.

If you have any questions, I'll be around most of today and tomorrow.

I have a team of enthusiastic and clueful programmers working on fixing the problem, and I have complete confidence in their abilities. I'm really hoping we won't be down for long.

Thanks for your understanding and support!!!

FYI... While we were at NASFiC, we were getting the redirect even by typing in the exact web address. We haven't checked it lately.

Subject: [ICG-D] Costume-ConNections upgrade in progress!

Subject: Convention costume exhibit list

Greetings costumers!

I have a bit of a pipe dream of someday having an ICG costume museum, or a collection of costumes that can be loaned out for museum/convention exhibits.

As I don’t have unlimited funds or space, this will likely remain a pipe dream for a while. But, I have an idea for something totally feasible – a “master list,” if you will, of costumers who are willing to lend out specific costumes for exhibits at conventions (or maybe museums? Who knows!). I envision having this list available for people who run conventions with costuming exhibits (ex. Costume-Con), so that they may more easily find those of us willing to display our costumes. I plan to eventually have this integrated into the ICG Online that Marianne and Mera spoke about at the ICG meeting at CC37. Of course, if you would like to be included in this list, you will be under no obligation to display anything at a particular convention. This is simply for informational purposes.

If you have a costume that you would be willing to include in an exhibit, please contact me off list at ayekasong@gmail.com  with your name, the costume name (and a photo or link to a photo), and a preferred way for a convention to contact you.

Thank you!

Subject: Future Fashion Folio

The deadline for entering this year's Future Fashion Folio is September 1.

You can draw whatever costume you like.  Apply or break the laws of physics; drawings don't care.

Please check out this year's rules at:  http://costumecon38.org/en/programming/competitions-and-events/fff/

Note:  Two special categories have been added for this year only

"What Would Trixy Wear?"

and

"National Costume"

The folio for Costume-Con 38 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada will be published late this year or early next, and maybe someone will make up a design of yours!

Subject: Worldcon 2019: An Irish Worldcon Masquerade Results
HI everyone -- sorry this took a couple days to post. Getting it out of the spreadsheets into a format that was readable in email took a bit of massaging.

We had a total of 35 entries cross the stage, roughly 50% Novice Division entries. The show started at 8:06 PM and we said goodnight to the audience at 10:36 PM. Everyone looked amazing and I heard nothing but compliments from members the rest of the weekend.
My production and judging teams were phenomenal and I want to commend them for their hard work. Official Photos will be released fairly soon; it will take a little longer to build the archival video.
