Hi, everyone,

Does anyone have a good photo of the Jabberwock from the Costume-Con 36
F/SF Masquerade? That would be entry 33. The Jabberwock did not get into
the official photography room, so the Official Photographer didn't get a
shot of it. We would like the photo for the Costume-Con and ICG Archives.

Thanks

You have to really look because I did tone-on-tone. In the sunlight it shows easier because it is metallic thread. You can see some glints if you look closely enough.

Subject: T-Shirt Ideas
I have some t-shirts that I was thinking of taking apart to do a t-shirt quilted garment.

Then, I got to thinking about all that fabric that would be wasted. I was thinking of cutting them up and doing a piecing pattern to create a different garment. I’ve noticed that pieced stretchy fabrics seem to have seams on the outside rather than the inside because it seems they’re serged with the seams vertical rather than flat.

Is that the best way to go?

Kicking ideas around now. I’m also playing with the idea of maybe doing some discharge on the darker fabrics to come up with some interesting textures.

I like the idea of making a wearable garment out of t-shirts instead of the usual quilts that you see all the time.  A coat or vest made up of old convention t-shirts would be fun.

Here's a fascinating little film, about 5 min long, comprised of colorised photos (except for one not colorised) of various scenes in NY City from 1900 to 1919.
Of course, we've all seen black/white photos like these many times before, and many times they were a bit unfocussed, but we understood they were of a time 'long ago & far away' (as the 1930s song phrased it).
But now, the coloring has not only made the scenes bright and vivid, but also somehow it now appears that the people depicted are just as real as anyone on the streets today.
Enjoy !!

Sorry if this is a repeat--I wrote this all out, and then got an error message, so I'm retrying.

I just found out about a free online history course--I think it's just a series of video lectures, but the teachers have impressive credentials (one is a curator of the dress collection at the royal palaces). It starts in a few weeks. More info:

A History of Royal Fashion takes you into the wardrobes of British kings and queens across five royal dynasties from the Tudors, Stuarts and Georgians to the Victorians and Windsors.

With exclusive access to the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, experts at the University of Glasgow and Historic Royal Palaces will introduce you to the different sources we can use to study fashion history.

Go behind the ! scenes at the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace and the Banqueting House to explore the styles of monarchs and their families and the impact of their clothing on society.

Learn how royalty used fashion to entertain, control and impress.

Subject: Ann Arbor Places of Interest
While in Ann Arbor last week, I came across places of interest for costumers and people who upcycle and remake clothing.

Ann Arbor Sewing Center
5235 Jackson Road
734-761-3094
—> They have lots of fusible items, including fusible batting in both double- and single-sided adhesives. So, you could quilt something without having to worry about pins! Their fabric prices were higher than I’d consider worth paying, and you can get the fabrics they had locally.

The Share House
Jackson Road
—> If you’re Ann Arbor local, you should be frequenting this place often. When I was there, they had blue jeans for $1.50 or $2.50 with the second pair free. This is the place to go to for upcycling supplies. They also had other clothing and wedding dressing to choose from. Some fabric, trims, and yarn to choose from, but nothing that excited me.

Pink Castle Fabrics
1915 Federal Blvd.
877-808-8695
<www.pinkcastlefabrics.com>
This is a place that *everyone* should take a look at. Their website has pictures of all the fabrics that they have, and they have a selection that I have not seen anywhere else. Liberty of London in prints and colors I have not seen before. Japanese prints that are fun. Even people who love anime will enjoy their Japanese fabrics. Really *nice* quality stuff that while not cheap, is not horrifically expensive, either. Even though I was not intending to buy fabric, some fabric demanded that I purchase them. High quality cottons and linens. The hand on this stuff is absolutely beautiful! They ship internationally.

If I go back to Ann Arbor at any point, I’ll be making another visit to Pink Castle Fabrics. Yes, it’s that good a place.

Until later--

These are just some ideas for articles to submit. Please email submissions to either myself or Vicky by October 15th.

Are there any new chapters out there that would like to introduce themselves?
Do you have any costuming specific holiday traditions you'd like to tell us about?
World Con and other event reviews are always welcome.

These are just some ideas for articles to submit. Please email submissions to either myself or Vicky by October 15th.

Thank you,
Melina

I am going to try to do a write up of DragonCon’s costuming exhibit this year, assuming that I can get approval from the costuming track coordinator.  If I can’t get it in for Oct 15, could it be used for Jan/Feb?

Hi Everyone,
I have published an instructional video on Youtube about the Laughing Moon Mercantile Stockings pattern #202. A professional actress or videographer I'm not, but I hope the content is there. Stockings can be worn in virtually any genre of costuming as well as wearing to modern work or play, so if you think one of your groups might be interested, please cross post.  I will be putting up another video on machine embroidery for the stockings in the next day or two as well.  Thanks!  https://youtu.be/Z7XY5rJCBcU

I ran across these things I thought might interest you all:

1) The online version of Peggy Hamilton Adams' papers at UCLA. The collection features lots of 1930s Hollywood high fashion. Search for your favorite designers, e.g., Travis Banton, or items, e.g., cape, and see what comes up. There are even a few costume sketches. https://calisphere.org/collections/354/?q=

2) If you're thinking of going down to LA, this event comes up soon:

Artist at Work: French Fashion Demonstration

GETTY CENTER

Saturday, November 3, 2018, fr! om 1 pm - 3 pm

Museum Lecture Hall

Free | No ticket required

Dressing a live model, costume historian Maxwell Barr demonstrates the extraordinary craftsmanship and virtuosity involved in creating the daily wardrobe required by fashion icon Marie-Antoinette and other elite households of the 18th-century in this free, drop-in program. Complements the installation and exhibitions: A Queen's Treasure from Versailles: Marie-Antoinette's Japanese Lacquer, All That Glitters and 18th-Century Pastel Portraits.

Subject: Jan/Feb newslettre content reques
Hello everyone,

The holiday season is rapidly approaching, if not already upon us, and so is the Jan/Feb newslettre. I'm sending out this request for content a bit early to give everyone a little extra time during this busy season.

Did you make any New year's sewing/costuming resolutions in January? How about writing up a short blurb of how those worked out? Maybe you're thinking of some new resolutions?

Is your group doing anything special for the holidays? We'd love to see a write-up of how things went. Or maybe your group has some plans for the new year that you'd love to tell us about.

Perhaps there's a new techique you've learned and would love to share. Or a new book/resource review.

Costume Con is coming up in March, is there anything you or your group would like to share in regards to that event?

Anything related to costuming or the ICG itself would be greatly appreciated.

Please send any questions or articles to me at mchestley@gmail.com

Articles are due on December 15th, 2018.

Thank you

Subject: ICG Elections 2019 (and a few other reminders)
Good afternoons!

I would like to remind everyone that Costume Con is coming and with it, our annual ICG Elections. All who are interested (including any current officers who are willing to serve again!) are invited to submit nominations.

Per our Standing Rules:
  1. Nominations for Officers of the Corporation shall be made in writing to the President of the Corporation at least 30 days in advance of the annual meeting. It is recommended that the President of the Corporation has served at least one term as a Chapter President, Chapter Representative, or as an ICG officer. [Adopted 2/15/1990, Amended 4/25/2012]
Nominations are due by February 22. Earlier is ok too!

Our fabulous Jeanine Swick has agreed to run for Treasurer again, and I'm willing to serve another year as President if you'll have me, though providing options for the ICG's constituents is never a bad thing!

Also, LAA nominations are due by January 22 so we have time for the actual vote! We have a couple nominations in already this year and I'm always happy to receive more. It's a pleasure to make the choice as fiendishly difficult as possible.

Happy New Year,
Marianne Pease
ICG President

I was trying to make a reservation for CostumeCon, but the Doubletree
web site telling me that the convention rate is unavailable. And gives
me prices that are $80 more than the $129 convention rate. What's the
problem?

The CC 37 web page specifically says that the convention rate is good
through Feb 19.

Also, if anyone is looking for a female non-smoking roommate to share at
CC 37, I'd be interested in that as well.

Interesting. The ad says that Burda is on sale for 2.49 and that Simplicity is on sale for $1.99 through the 26th.

Butterick is on sale for $1.99 the 27th through the 31st.

However, the e-mail that I got says that through the 26th, you get 70% off Simplicity *and* McCall’s patterns when you stack the normal 40% off plus the included 50% off coupon.

70% off reads pretty good until you realize that’s more expensive than the sales price they normally have for Simplicity for $1.99. I *suspect* that they won’t let you take 70% off the $1.99 sales price, but it would be an interesting experiment to try.

The McCall’s pattern sale ended yesterday.

Until later--

Carole

If you are a Hilton Honors member, there is a "Honors long weekend special" that comes out very close to the convention block rate. Be sure to sign in to the site, and have the reservation tool display all room types.

Thank you,  Aurora. I guess I'll go ahead and make the reservations and keep my fingers crossed. I was trying to wait for the group to sort out who was coming, but that may have been a mistake.

There are still plenty of rooms in the hotel, just none in our cheaper block.  We can move rooms into the block if they are booked at the regular rate and we get the block increased or if someone from the block cancels.

The CC 37 web page specifically says that the convention rate is good
through Feb 19.

Also, if anyone is looking for a female non-smoking roommate to share at
CC 37, I'd be interested in that as well.

Thank you,  Kevin. I did use the Hilton member login. I have two rooms that average about $160 a night with taxes, which is not horrible. I have a third room that was $140 a night before taxes, but it seemed to only be available for 5 nights at that price.
