Most of you know we have a large cat family.
This morning, Dec. 3, 2017 at 6:50 AM our oldest, Ramses, died. We have had 19 cats in our lives. Ramses, with our first, LiChaiya, and Maleficent were the ones I loved the most. He was a pure-bred ruddy Abyssinian, the only cat we have ever purchased from a breeder. (All our others we have gotten from family, rescued, or were born to one of our own.)
He was a sweet cat who epitomized the nature of his breed.  Abyssinians are known to be aggressively affectionate. He loved everyone. He never reacted in anger to anyone; nary an attempt to bite or scratch.
He loved to be held. I (Pierre) could hold him for hours. He would rub his face against mine. He would sleep with me and sit by my side. My brother was so impressed with Ramses he found the same breeder (who had moved to another state) to get an Abyssinian as well; Aurelian, Ramses’ nephew.
For the past year or so he has had kidney disease. The vet assured us he was not in pain. Though he slept a lot, he was still interested in life. He could jump up onto the kitchen counters when he wanted to. He still moved with a spring in his step.
When I got up this morning at 6:30 I went into the kitchen to start getting ready for Mass. He was in his bed in the dining room and watched me go by. A few minutes later I came back into the dining room. He had stepped out of his bed and was sprawled on the floor.
In a panic I picked him up. He cried for a few moments and then settled down. I put him down and he tried to walk. With every step he lurched from side to side. Then he fell over. I picked him back up. He cuddled into my arms. I held him until he passed away.
We’re in bad shape at the moment. Sandy isn’t a crier, but I’m Italian. I’ve been crying on and off all day. I hurt. It will pass. It has for all the others we have lost. But he’ll always be with us. Despite the pain we feel today, we wouldn’t give up a moment of his life with us.
He has crossed the Rainbow Bridge to join the rest of our clowder of babies. Someday we’ll be with them again. We are in no rush for that, but it comforts us to know it’s true.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.  Ramses sounds like a very special boy.  I am on my second Abyssinian (pet quality from a reputable local breeder) and they are awesome kitties.

So, I have some leftover muslin strips that were used for a mummy costume. I believe I have enough to make a garment like a dress, long vest, or maybe a type of coat. Thing is, I’ve made so many coats lately, that I hesitate to make another one right now.

I’m playing with dyeing the muslin. Do people think it would be better to use the same color on all the pieces and either do a different technique on each piece as a kind of sampler garment, or do the same thing on all the strips? Or, if I do the same thing on all the strips, maybe do different colors on each strip or a different dye technique on each piece?

Remember, that I tend to do 50 paces garments (as it can be seen from 50 paces away), but I’ve also done a few modest pieces, too.

> I’m playing with dyeing the muslin. Do people think it would be better to use the same color on all the pieces and either do a different technique on each piece as a kind of sampler garment, or do the same thing on all the strips? Or, if I do the same thing
on all the strips, maybe do different colors on each strip or a different dye technique on each piece?

Subject: Costume-Con 36 Ports of Call

Hi, everyone,

Chair of the convention here. Just wanted to share a little bit of info about this little gathering that is coming up in 4 months. Actually, it ends 4 days from today. Are you getting excited?

If you're looking for a roommate, you can contact our Roommate director with your queries by emailing cc36roommates@gmail.com

The masquerades are coming along. Have you looked at the Single Pattern Masquerade patterns on the website?  Is your imagination in gear?

On Saturday, we're having a tea. The tickets for Tea by the Sea will be on sale within the next week or so. Along with the tea (which is $55), there will be a Captains and Beachwear Through the Ages Fashion Show. If interested in being in the fashion show, please let Tracy Gomez at thehistoricalhairdresser@gmail.com

The Future Fashion Folio will be released within the next couple of days. We're having some technical difficulties in getting it released but I'm hoping it can be worked out by Monday or Tuesday. Once it's released, I can tell you there are a lot of great designs to choose from.

And don't forget that on Friday night after the Single Pattern Competition, there will be a Victory Dance where you can eat donuts and coffee and do some swing dancing. If you don't know how to swing dance, we'll be having a couple of classes earlier in the day.

If you have a costuming group or chapter of the ICG and want to sponsor time in the hospitality suite, breakfast and lunch will be $200 and some kind of dinner meal will be for $250.  This will help make the Hospitality Suite a good place to sit, nosh and have good conversations. And a way to promote your chapter or group.

The future conventions of Costume-Con 37 and 38 have chosen times I do believe. Other than that, the times are wide open. So, please, if interested in sponsoring time in the hospitality suite, contact Marti Webb at Smartijo@gmail.com.

Also, if you want to be a program participant, you can contact programming at CC36programming@gmail.com.

Hi - I by chance drove by Beverly’s the other day (on Hillsdale) and was broken-hearted they were closing.  I have loved them as a friendly alternative to Michael’s and JoAnn’s—plus inspired by their Xmas decorations and variety.

Anyway, it will be a couple of months before they are all the way closed.  They have everything at 20% off right now.

So your chance to get some goodies!

You may have already seen the posts on our Facebook group (join us here! https://facebook.com/groups/315077302329938) or Slack (contact me for an invitation if you haven't received one already, or if you lost it!) but it's time to submit your nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award. You can see the rules governing the LAA in Section 21 of the Standing Rules - http://costume.org/documents/StandingRules.html but nominations may be submitted by individual ICG members as well as chapters as a whole.

There are many many worthy potential nominees who have been active in the community for at least ten years, been recognized for their skills, and who have made significant contributions in service to it, and I look forward to seeing all the excellent candidates.

Thank You,

Hello costumers! I am sending this message on behalf of the newsletter co-editor, Melina.

Good evening everyone, Your newslettre co-editor here. It is time once again to solicit articles for our upcoming issue. Today though I'm taking a slightly different tack. I'm seeking your input regarding content. What types of articles would you like to see? Are there any specific topics you want to see covered? Also, if you do happen to have an idea or an article for us, feel free to send it to either Vicky or myself. Book reviews, costuming do's and don'ts, pimping something your chapter has done recently or is preparing for; all those and more would be more than welcome.

You can send your ideas to us at icg-newsletter@costume.org.
Thank you!

Whoops. I probably should have introduced myself.

I've been a member of the ICG for a few years now. I found this group after attending my first costume con in 2014 in Toronto and became a member of the Silicone Web chapter as I live in rural Eastern Ontario.

Even though I went to my first convention back in 1990/1991, it's only recently that I've moved to this form of costuming (life happened). I've been (and still am) a SCA member for a long time but I wanted to learn and do more in regards to costuming so I was very excited to find the ICG. Recently, Vicky agreed to take me on in the role of co-editor of the newslettre.

My current costuming forms include; Early medieval Russian, Cosplay and some original design work (I am having the most fun with this part). I am not very prolific or very quick but I am enjoying learning all the new things that come with branching out one's skills.

I don't have a webpage with my costumes on it. Most of my work ends up either on my Facebook page or instagram (@Ninka1372). Though that has recently been more cat pics due to a significant arm injury. I'm back to sewing though (finally) so costuming should be showing up again, especially since con season is ramping up.

I will not be attending Costume Con this year (just can't afford it) but I already have my tickets for Danvers and Montreal. One day, I want to make a World Con.

Thank you all for the welcome.

Archive PSA:

Given the riotous nature of some masquerade audiences may I suggest an announcing method for after a presentation?

Repeat the entry number, division & title (pause to let them settle) then the entrant name.

Cause if you say their name right after they leave the stage, ain't nobody gonna hear it. Not live or later.

And as I listen to masquerade DVDs to gather entry information that wasn't provided by the con-committee - believe me, I can't understand a word you're saying during the initial screaming.

Thanks,

Nora

Melina —

With an interest in medieval Russian dress, do you have a copy of "The Domostroi?" Its author was the 16th century equivalent of Martha Stewart! If you haven’t seen it, there’s an English-language version available in paperback from the Cornell University Press. The ISBN is 0-8014-9689-6.

You can see the rules governing the LAA in Section 21 of the Standing Rules - http://costume.org/documents/ StandingRules.html but nominations may be submitted by individual ICG members as well as chapters as a whole.

There are many many worthy potential nominees who have been active in the community for at least ten years, been recognized for their skills, and who have made significant contributions in service to it, and I look forward to seeing all the excellent candidates.

Thank You,
