Nope. It’s a dye inspiration thing. I’m thinking of dyeing a skirt purple, and I was looking for inspiration as to what shape(s) to put on it.

Interesting. I do not see colors as shapes and don't associate them with anything in particular.  What I mean is an apple (at least traditionally) is red, but when I think of red I don't think of an apple

I  wanted to thank the ICG Marty Gear Fund for approving my application for a $1000 grant for Miss Lizzy's to continue the ongoing recovery after the severe water event that decimated Miss Lizzy's Parlor and caused the loss and damage of a great many items that I have worked to collect over the past 5-6 years including reference books, antique clothing, antique fashion periodicals and many related items.

I am documenting with photos and written updates and will continue to do so as the effort progresses.  Anyone who wants to come personally is welcome, just let me know when to expect you or when you are available, and I will happily put you to work!

My most sincere thanks,

Lisa Ashton

PS, I seem to be having trouble putting this up on the ICG-D list.  Perhaps one of you could forward it for me, since my machine keeps sending it back to me! Thank you

Good evening everyone. It's that time again. Vicky and I are trying to put together the ICG Newslettre and we need your help.

I know a number of you made it to Costume Con and I'm sure there are some stories that you'd love to share. Did your chapter give out any awards or recognitions? If so, why don't you tell everyone else about it? Any one have a report on the masquerades or the contests?

Also, I know that there are members gearing up for Worldcon. Is there something you want to promote?

Any articles or write-ups would be gratefully accepted. We're also happy to accept book, tool or technique reviews or tutorials.

We'd need the articles/write-ups submitted by June 20th. If you have any questions or want to get some clarification on an idea, feel free to contact either of us.

Worldcon 76
by Carole Parker

If you ever wanted a costumer-friendly convention, this is your convention! Many of the staff members are costumers (chair, division heads, and others), and we have Special Guests Pierre and Sandy Pettinger!

For the costumers who have been inspired by his writings, Spider Robinson will be here at Worldcon 76!

Our costuming sessions are shaping up with not only panels but workshops and demonstrations as well. Plus, we have:

* A Cospitality Area that will be in the Exhibit Hall.

* Costuming exhibits in the Exhibit Hall.

* Worldcon Masquerade.

Along with all the costuming items, we’ll have the usual hard science, media-related items, writing, and other subjects covered.

Other items of interest, for those that have a little time before or after Worldcon 76:

* San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles (https://www.sjquiltmuseum.org) less than a half mile away.

* Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose (https://www.cdm.org).

* The Tech Museum of Innovation (https://www.thetech.org).

* The Winchester Mystery House (https://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com) has opened something like 30 new rooms in the mansion (https://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/select-your-tour/explore-more-tour/). So if you’ve been before, you have new stuff to look at.

* The Lace Museum (http://www.thelacemuseum.org) in Sunnyvale, about 20 minutes away, is the first U.S. Western museum dedicated to lace. They also have lace making supplies that you can purchase.

For those wanting to go a little further afield, we have wineries within a hour’s drive. You don’t have to go Napa or Sonoma to get wine. You can find some wineries within Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties - the county we’re in and the next one over closer to the coast.

We hope to see many of you here at Worldcon 76 in San Jose, CA from August 16-20!

Subject: Westercon
Hi, all,

Just a note to anyone going to Westercon this  year. I've been informed
that Westercon plans to run the masquerade at 3 in the afternoon on
Saturday. The folks in charge were told by my contact, John Hertz, that
that is a inconvenient time and traditionally should be in the evening.
He was told that "Well, no one has complained," though I have seen
several folks on other lists I'm on comment on it (in combination with
other odd things this committee is doing.) At any rate, John interprets
the chair's comment as an invitation for comment. So, if you are going,
and especially if you were planning on competing, contact the committee
chair and let them know if you find this inconvenient. If you someone
else going and/or competing that isn't on this list suggest it to them
as well. If you are okay with this time, then, okay, or contact them as
well with your approval.

Thanks

Pierre

I’ve posted two new updates (numbers 7 and 8) to the GoFundMe for Lisa Ashton and Miss Lizzy’s Traveling Historical Fashion Show, a 501c3 non-profit organization focusing on education about the Victorian era through hands-on access to collections. On May 16, 2018, she suffered a catastrophic loss when several days of torrential rains overcame her pumping system and the collection was flooded with 3 feet of water.

Her insurance claim was denied and we’re still only half way to the GoFundMe goal, so please support the restoration effort if you can, and please share the campaign everywhere you can think of.

The problem was that her supplier (Jacquard) decided that she didn't qualify as a reseller and wanted her to pay consumer prices for the paints. That would apply to anyone who purchased the business from her as well.

Subject: Worldcon 76 Masquerade Help Wanted
Going to the World Science Fiction Convention in San Jose, CA (August 16-19) and looking for something to do on Saturday evening? Like to volunteer and help out? If so, as the masquerade green room manager I need you. I’m looking for den moms, mother’s helpers, and other staff for the green room. Den moms are in charge of a number of masquerade entries to make sure they’re ready to go on stage when it’s time to do so. “Den mom” is a unisex term; your gender is not relevant. Mother’s helpers assist den moms as needed. Den moms and mother’s helpers are likely to be on their feet for several hours before and during the masquerade. On the other hand, you get to see the costumes up close, as well as receive the thanks of the masquerade team. Experience is desirable but not necessary. We’ll train you.

If you’re interested, get back to me at byronpconnell@gmail.com

Hello All:

If you’re coming to Worldcon 76 in San Jose, CA August 16-20, and you need mobility assistance information:

<http://www.worldcon76.org/member-services/accessibility>

For those into costuming, yes, we are going to have a lot of costuming panels and some workshops. If you thought you volunteered to be part of costume programming, but you haven’t heard anything, please send me an e-mail: mscip@worldcon76.org

It has been noted that if you have a gmail account, that some messages have been routed to the “Promotions” bin of their system.

Things that are of interest to costumers:

* A magnificent Masquerade, and the crew is a really excellent crew that many of you will know.

* Pierre and Sandy Pettinger are Special Guests of Worldcon 76! If you haven’t met these award-winning costumers from the midwest, this is an excellent opportunity to meet them.

* The Chair of Worldcon 76 is well-known costumer Kevin Roche. So, yes, the costuming is going to be good here.

We look forward to seeing many of you here, in San Jose, CA!

Subject: Opportunity for ICG chapters to host a party at Worldcon 76
ASFA (Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists) has a suite at the Fairmont for Worldcon weekend, but are short on volunteers to host. (Unlike SFWA, the ASFA suite is usually open to all convention members).

I am hosting a smallish private reception there Friday evening, and would like to invite ICG chapters to then open up the space to general convention membership.

There is no charge for the space; I am already providing some beverages and snacks (more would certainly be welcome). The severe lack is people to run the party.

If any chapters would be interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact me at chair@worldcon76.org and I will pass you on to the ASFA liaisons.

I am excited to let everyone know:

* We have more than 60 programming sessions during the run of Worldcon 76.

* Pierre and Sandy Pettinger are going to be at Worldcon 76 as Special Guests.

* We have workshops where you can get hands on, and demonstrations where you can see stuff. Plus some detailed talks on some topics where you can find out the details of a subject.

* Plus the Masquerade on Saturday night.

* For those that remember him, Jay Hartlove - a former master-level costumer and now published writer, has a musical premier happening on Thursday evening - The Mirror’s Revenge. Music done by Bay Area musicians Margaret Davis and Kristoph Klover.

Of course, we could not have excellent programming without all the wonderful volunteer Programming Participants who make this possible.

The program is up on the Worldcon 76 website, so please, come take a look and see what interests you:

Subject: Looking for submissions for the fall newslettre
Good morning,

It is that time once again. Vicky and I are looking to fill the Sep/Oct newslettre with what is happening in the guild and what its' members are up to. Which means we need you to tell us those things, written up as a submission/article for us to publish.

Is your chapter planning anything special for Hallowe-en?
Any tips or hacks for Hallowe'en costuming?
Have you recently attended a costuming function?
Created something that you'd be willing to write up a tutorial on how it was accomplished?
Have a review of a costuming/prop-making book or online research source?

Those are just a few examples of the types of articles we're looking for but feel free to add other ideas.

Please send your submission to myself or to Vicky by August 20th.

For those of you attending Worldcon, have an excellent weekend and please keep in mind that we will be looking for articles about Worldcon for the next issue.

Subject: Quilt and Wearable Art Contests of Potential Interest - Santa Clara
The Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) held in Santa Clara in October, has *both* quilt contests and wearable art contests.

You need to hurry because TODAY (August 28th) is the last day to enter.

While the rules do not require that your wearable art have quilting techniques done on it, it has been noted that wearable items with quilting techniques seem to do better in the judging. One costumer, Kevin Roche, has won a wearable art award with Seminole piecing on the collar and lights as part of the garment. Another garment that received an award was a steampunk outfit that had  some quilting on the corset cover if I recall correctly.

The nice thing about this contest is that *money* is awarded for the winners. Take a look and see if you’re interested in entering something.

Please forward to other appropriate lists, groups, and individuals.

Until later—

Carole
