Quoting

**** Do it ****

Please quote or paraphrase the original message you are replying to.

I often play "catch-up", reading a large number of messages in one
sitting, but I still occasionally say "Huh?" to someone's one
line reply to message posted days ago.

Think about how confused someone who has hours or even days
between reading messages can get.

**** Don't do too much of it ****

When you quote, please do some trimming.

* Delete the list sig
* Delete the persons sig
* Delete details of an event you are commenting on
* Trim down the original post to just what you are replying to.
There is no need to quote 3 paragraphs of message,
when you are addressing something in just one of them,
or just to say: "I agree." or "Me too."

**** Be clear about seperating your comments ****

* Most of the time a blank line is sufficent.
* If you wish to highlight your text, use a
different character then your chosen
quoting character.
ie: Don't hightlight with ">" when
the original is marked with ">" as well.

Well, according to a University of Newcastle (Australia) survey in 1999,
Venus de Milo had the following measurements

Bust: 34"
Waist 31.2"
Hips 40.8"
Height 5'4"

At 5'4", she would be in the "petite" size range. My guess as to her sizes
would peg her at size 10 or 12 for her top and around a size 14 or 16 for the
bottom.

The problem with the question as to dress size, is that no standard dress size
exists. One designer could have a woman in a size 8, and another designer
could have the same woman in a size 12 or 14.

To the costumers seeing this message in time: I'm curious to see what you think.

Until later--

For laughs, I use a photo of the Venus de Milo on my web page
(http://members.aol.com/randwhit/measure.htm) in an illustration of how to
take bust, waist, and hip measurements when ordering a custom garment.

I also note that Venus would be considered short-waisted in modern size
scales.

That sounds about right for a petite size. I think that is part of the petite
sizing scale. I don't believe you find a long-waisted petite woman.

Not quite true. If you define petite as a height standard (which it is) then I've known several women who qualify as short-waisted. I have one friend who's just a hair shorter than I am
(I'm 5' 2"), who's extremely long-waisted. Judging by her torso length, she should be around
5' 8" or 9", she just has shorter legs in proportion.
And as far as anime goes, many Asian women have longer torsos in proportion to their legs.

Sorry I've got you there.  I've always been a long waisted petite.  I even have problems with regular sizes beening short waisted.  But to make up for it I have a very short rise and am swayback.

I also have a girlfriend who is 4'10' with a full size frame but needs to wear girls jeans because her legs are so short.

My understanding was that the *standard* petite size was for short-waisted
women. Wonderful exceptions always happen to the general rules. ;-)

www.theonering.net has a lot of pictures and a decient search engine,
but not all the pictures are labeled.

The exhibit was in Toronto at Casa Loma. The thumbnails are
rediculusly small... but start with:
http://www.theonering.net/movie/scrapbook/source/Casa_Loma_Exhibit

Also send them over to f-costume where we're discussing.

I will be getting links together in web page soon with the PR
inforation on costumes that New Line released.

Actually, looking at the photo, I think you might want to slide that
"waist" bar down just a tad (maybe one bar width?).

Those certainly look like my proportions, and I'm a standard store-size
petite. (If only they'd make more size 16 petites...)

5'2" and everything in proportion.

Sigh...

Does any one mind if I put a link from my website to that? A number of people have either asked me about, or have just mentioned, Tolkien related costumes (not exclusively from the film, but then this does include longstanding TS members!)

Gristle, do you have a tape of that segment. Who were they
interviewing??? The 48 meter quote comes from the New Line web site
from an interview with the wardrobe supervision, Carolyn Fehton.
It's seems like an insane amount of fabric to use. 15 is still a lot
of fabric, but haven't studied the riders that heavy yet so wouldn't
even have an educated guess.

We won't move anymore, I promise.

My new Houppelande is about 40 yds of fabric (20 upholstery face, 20 satin lining), so I can see that much on the Ring Wraiths, especially in what looked to very a thin, gauzy fabric.

Okay folks, I will be making it to Australia.  But because I didn't know you could book an award (air miles) and cancel it if nec. I waited too long.  I had to have minor surgery on 12/28 and wait for the results to see if I required major surgery or if I could go.  Everything was fine.

However, at this point I have to fly Air Pacific Chicago to LA to Fiji and had to buy a ticket from Fiji to Melbourne (through Sydney) and back.  Unfortunately, the "and back isn't through LA.  Instead on 12/ 22 I'll fly into Vancouver, Canada and spend the night before flying to Dallas and then finally Chicago on the 23rd.

Is anyone interested in getting together for dinner on Friday night when I get in?  Can anyone recommend a hotel that's not too expensive or far from the hotel.  I have a 7:00 something flight in the morning so have to be at the airport by 5:00 somthing  so wouldn't want to impose.

My home e-mail is michelesol@aol.com and my work address is msolomon@allstate.com

I can check it out on a friend's copy of the Sci-Fi special, if you really
want. What I DO know is whatever material they used, they used a HELLUVA lot
of it...! ;) I'd love to get some of that. I have a Death concept that would
look great done in the Ringwraith material.

Good one Alix! (Even if my reply is VERY late.)

Personally, I'm very thoughtful about picking up little gifts and things for
my friends when I'm out shopping. However, I'm dreadful about actually
Giving the items to people. My friends and family are somewhat accustomed
to receiving Christmas Presents for Valentine's Day, that sort of thing.
Jeff & I have two boxes of Christmas cards on the shelf under the TV.
They've been there for 3 or 4 years. I pulled them out at last year's New
Year's Eve party and offered to hand them out. Everyone said they would
wait for the postman. The cards are STILL here.

After collecting items for friends out of town for years, I heard that their
house had burned down. All the family was fine and thier extended family
had donated lots of furniture and clothes and such, but my friends had lost
all thier costumes and horror related nick nacks. Since I couldn't bare to
think of my friends without costumes, I sent them a care package. It
included replacement Morticia & Gomez costumes which they wore for thier
wedding, a haunted house snow globe with little bats, a corset with pansies,
hats, gloves, fishnet stockings, packaged costumes from the Savior Fair line
(very nice if you haven't seen them) candle holders, etc. You know, all the
truely needful things that Moms, Dads, Aunts and Uncles don't think about.
On the outside of the box, I wrote "Happy Halloween, Merry Christmas, Joyous
New Year, Happy Valentine's day, Groundhog day, Armistist day, Birthday,
Anniversery" and anything else I could think of. I was quite relieved to
hear that they DID receive the big box. I was somewhat worried about it
being delivered to the wrong house. Could you imagine a mundain opening
such a box?

Susan

Hi Folks.

Sorry that I've been gone so long, but I've been in a bit of a funk. Trust
me, if you think my Email rambles on to long when I'm happy, you DON'T want
to read what I write when depressed! I was disappointed (yet secretly
relieved) when Charlotte lost the Worldcon Bid. I'm sure you all figured
out how nervouse I was about it by all my emails. Then there was that whole
Sept. 11th thing. Then it was Halloween followed WAY to quickly by
Christmas. Honestly, when you run a costume shop, the LAST thing you want
to do when you get home is talk, read or write about costumes at Halloween &
Christmas!

You know, when I was a kid, I was alway unhappy that I "lost" my mother for
about 3 months each year because of "tax season" (She's an accountant who
specializes in Taxes). Now, I realize that I've done the same thing to my
own son by sellecting a profession which completely takes over my life for
Halloween. At least it's only one month instead of three.

So! (or should that be Sew?) What's up aside from Venus & LOTR?

Hugs,
Susan

I get into Melbourne on Thursday 2/14 at 1:50 p.m., so would also like to find folks to go to dinner with that night (and I think you offered a ride from the airport).  I get into Vancouver Canada on Friday 2/22 and that's when I'd like to find someone to do dinner with.

I'm trying this here since I didn't get an answer with your direct mail.  Chris, you still haven't answered my e-mail about the motel I found on the edge of campus that is closer than the Bell Street Inn, but has air conditioning which the dorms don't.  PLEASE ANSWER ASAP, I MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS.  Both of these motels also have a fridge in their rooms, but neither have irons in each room.  Plan on going to the laundry or bringing your own, what what I was told.

Please copy me at msolomon@allstate.com since they have blocked access to all outside service providers after Nimda.

Yeah, Boston won. Really no surprise. It's really hard for an underdog
newcomer to win against such a well established group. But we gave them a
heck of a good run for their money! Now all the Charlotte people are
talking about running for NASFIC and such since they all have worked so hard
to get everything set up. It's sort of like being all dressed up with no
where to go. Or, in costumer terms, it feels sort of like spending months
of work and tons of cash on a cool new costume for the con, then finding out
that the Masquerade has been canceled due to lack of participation. It
really leaves one feeling very "blah" while sweeping up the confetti.

The sad part is that after the vote came out, many of the Charlotte people
said, "Oh well, see you at Dragon." Many people took that very wrong. Most
thought it was serious Sour Grapes and that the Charlotte people were going
to "Boycott" Boston because we lost the bid. The truth of the matter is
that most of us were working on the bid to get a World Con to come back to
the Southeast. It's been a LONG TIME since MagicCon in Orlando! Many of us
can't afford to travel. I'm sure that most costumers are familiar with the
problem. You can afford to make a WorldCon caliber costume OR you can
afford to travel to the convention, you can't afford both.

Oh well. To look on the bright side, it gets me out of my personal moral
dilemma of what to do about entering my costumes in a show that I was going
to run. It is so RARE that I get to compete on the WorldCon level, that I
was really wishy washy about missing a chance to compete. However, I really
wanted the opportunity to run the show. Not that I have a power trip
problem, the thought of screwing it up actually scared the pants off me, but
I love a challenge. Oh well! It's all over now and I can move on to other
obsessions :-)

Hugs,
Susan

A tale of mummers and the ostrich feathers they love...and the cleaner
that keeps them together.

>From the article:

>>But ostrich feathers, at about $40 a dozen, are too costly to pluck at
the first sign of wear, said Broomall, whose band uses 3,000 plumes<<

3000 divide by 12 equals 250 dozen. Times $40 per dozen equals $10,000?!?
How do you tell your nearest and dearest that you're going to paying for
part of that? And since the feathers wear out, you're going to have to do
it every few years?

This is beyond crazy...

2 miles from the San Jose Convention Center. So our 13 year old can go to school

Needless to say, we won't be at Boston or DragonCon, *sigh*. We were tempted to

Our son does love his Kitty Hawk though and you put on a wonderful bid. Tell

I am in considerable sympathy, since Jacksonville's school year starts in
early August.

I am afraid, however, I am a scapegrace. We *do* pull John from school,
since he's been there a fortnight, for at least Friday-Monday. Regrettably,
this policy did shoot Australian trael in the head, a few yr ago. John
still hasn't forgiven the school board, and neither have we.

cordially, Bill

Susan -

Yeah, I know how you feel.

Take heart from the fact that I and the rest of Boston were in exactly this
position when we first ran a worldcon bid. It may have passed out of most
fannish memory - it was 1968 after all - but we lost our first bid against
New York - what was then Nycon III. A lot has happened since... New York
has waned and we set about to "plant obs" on the rest of fandom by helping
out wherever and whenever we could and took our regional more seriously as a
means of learning about con running.

One of the things we did to publicize ourselves was to be sure we had Boston
fans entering the masquerades, too. And our N3 bid even did a group costume
that involved virtually all the committee in some way.

I'm glad to hear your group is talking about putting together another con
running effort. Whatever happens with the NasFic, I hope you'll consider
doing a local con with Charlotte resources - Dragon may be close and
convenient, but it won't make you or Charlotte famous in SF fandom.

That's what worked for us - your mileage may differ.

Good Luck!

...Oh, and Happy New Year to everyone!

- Suford

Does anyone live in the Vancouver area?  I'm supposed to fly into Vancouver and spend the night on 2/22 on the way back from Australia.  I was hoping to meet someone for dinner.

I'd like to do a roll call for those of us going to CC20.  There have to be others going. <grin>.

Well I can say that I am going as well as Carl Mami.  We are leaving Newark, NJ on the 12th and flying to Tokyo for 1 day. Then on to Melbourne.  We will arrive there on Friday morning and leaving on Tuesday afternoon.

I guess that is 3 people going.

I did a search under Brooks Costume Co and came up with this link.
    http://www.talkinbroadway.com/rialto/past/1998/4_2_98.html
It mentions where the company is located in NY, this may be a start for you.

    http://www.streetswing.com/histmai2/d2pilar1.htm
This other link is for Pilar Gomez.
Again very little information but perhaps a start.

The jacket is incredible! you are very luck.

Thanks!  it was worth a shot.

I'm thinking of changing my plans a little again.  I may be going to Fiji a few days earlier (Monday) and staying in Melbourne until 2/22 after all.  I have a lot of phone calls.

For those of you going to Melbourne, would anyone like to go feed the fairy penguins?  I didn't get to do that last time, not enough time.  I'm also thinking of going to the zoo, they have a butterfly house.  I finally broke down and bought a digital camera so I can use it on the trip.  Is anyone else bringing theirs?  I'll probably have to read the book on the plane. <grin>

Can anyone at least recommend a hotel in Vancouver?

    Thanks,
